President’s Message

McCulloughBuild­ing Con­nec­tions + Cre­at­ing Val­ue…That is the theme our 2014–15 SMPS Board of Direc­tors has col­lec­tive­ly decid­ed will be our focus and theme this year. I am super excit­ed to be lead­ing an out­stand­ing team of my peers that will bring dif­fer­ent per­spec­tives and many diverse strengths to the orga­ni­za­tion, ulti­mate­ly mak­ing this year the best it can be for our SMPS Mem­bers.

But first, I would like to share about my very own “SMPS Moment” and why this year’s theme is very impor­tant to me. My expe­ri­ence was 13 years ago after leav­ing my career at West­field Cor­po­ra­tion as Mar­ket­ing Direc­tor of UTC shop­ping cen­ter. At this time, I had joined my hus­band, David in his new­ly-formed land­scape archi­tec­ture firm, McCul­lough Land­scape Archi­tec­ture. The A/E/C indus­try was very new to me, how­ev­er mar­ket­ing was not. Some­one at an AIA golf tour­na­ment shared with me almost imme­di­ate­ly how VALUABLE SMPS is and encour­aged me to attend an event. Imme­di­ate­ly I felt CONNECTED and began attend­ing edu­ca­tion events and net­work­ing, until I ulti­mate­ly joined a com­mit­tee and even­tu­al­ly became chair of that com­mit­tee – all along BUILDING VALUABLE rela­tion­ships (that I am hap­py to main­tain today) and learn­ing the intri­ca­cies of the indus­try. By tak­ing advan­tage of all the facets of the orga­ni­za­tion since that day in 2001, I max­i­mized my mem­ber­ship of SMPS by BUILDING CONNECTIONS that brought me incred­i­ble VALUE as a par­tic­i­pant of this rela­tion­ship-based indus­try.

We, at SMPS San Diego have plans to bring many oppor­tu­ni­ties to our Mem­bers allow­ing them to make that VALUABLE CONNECTION, whether it is to net­work with clients and coun­ter­parts through our mem­bers-only Net­work­ing Groups, frat­er­nize at our fun quar­ter­ly Lever­age Your Bev­er­age social mixers…or, attend our fact-filled month­ly Lun­cheon pro­grams, “Rock­star” Awards Gala, and our enter­tain­ing annu­al Golf Clas­sic. In addi­tion, Mem­bers will cer­tain­ly attain sol­id VALUE by just the CONNECTIONS they make when they BUILD upon their pro­fes­sion­al devel­op­ment through our awe­some Edu­ca­tion programs…or, if they come to our inspir­ing mem­bers-only Project Tours and events planned this year.
